If I could by anything I wanted to be,
I’d be a bird that could fly away,
I’d be a bird that could fly free,
From this place I have no wish to stay,
I’d soar from my troubles and fears,
I’d leave behind my pain and blood,
I’d fly away from my silver tears,
And leave them behind for good,
I’d fly over fields of corn,
And be carried on the wind up high,
I would not feel forlorn,
When I was flying through the sky,
I would dance through the clouds of white,
And sing a song so sweet,
As I admired others along my flight,
Never again walking on my feet,
I would preen my feathers to make them fine,
I would ride a roller coaster on a storm,
Then I’d bask in the sunshine,
And wait for a rainbow to form,
I’d fly away from the arguments of old,
Away from the times I could not bear,
Away from the tales I was long ago told,
And away from the knots in my hair,
I’d fly with other birds,
And fly low over flowers,
Alongside farmers and their herds,
And wash myself in small April showers,
Then I’d sleep in a nest of twigs,
Fly south for the winter,
And eat berries and figs,
Where none of my bones can splinter,
If I were a bird I’d fly far away,
I’d be free and never make a mistake,
But I’m a human today,
Trapped where I can’t escape
