The gritty streets of LA were the home of pop acts such as Poison and Whitesnake in the mid-80s. But a mean group was building momentum in 1986. A combination of ex-groups L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose, it featured Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, and Steven Addler. The group's first EP was released on the small Uzi/Suicide label. It gained them notice from Geffen records, who gave them their first major label deal. Appetite for Destruction went un-noticed for a while, but the single "Sweet Child O' Mine", a love-song written for Axl's girlfriend Erin Everly, gained them notoriety. With constant MTV play of the videos for "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Paradise City", Appetite gained more fame. A year after its 1987 release, it reached number 1 on the Billboard charts.
Their follow-up EP, G n' R Lies, was a live session, which contained the #1 single "Patience / Rocket Queen". But at the end of the album, the racist, vulgar statement of "One in a Million" spawned much criticism, especially from Slash's black mother. Despite the controversy, Guns continued to be one of the biggest arena fillers on earth. But due to his severe drug addiction, Axl released Addler. Matt Sorum was hired as a replacement.
The group retreated to the studio to produce the two Use Your Illusion albums, which respectively debuted at #1 and 2. Critics hailed these two albums as a coming of age for the band that never grew up. On tour, Rose confronted the members and forced them to sign papers that the band's name was his property, or else he would break up the band. The musicians unwillingly signed. After a grueling world tour, Izzy Stradlin handed in his walking papers. Guitarist Gilby Clarke stepped in for the cover-album The Spaghetti Incident?, but the group was already crumbling. The last recording with any two members of the original lineup was a recording of The Rolling Stones's "Sympathy for the Devil". Members kept leaving until it was simply a group of musicians that Rose had hired.
Rose retreated into seclusion for five years. Trying to find the right personnel, he spent millions of dollars on what may become Chinese Democracy, firing big-name producers such as Moby and Bob Ezrin. After a failed reunion tour, Rose disappeared once more. Meanwhile, Slash, Duff, and Matt Sorum re-grouped to form Velvet Revolver, a Scott Weiland-fronted group of raw aggression, much like the Guns of old. (source: rateyourmusic.com/artist)
